Volume-scalable high-brightness three-dimensional visible light source
DWPI Title: Light source comprises three-dimensional photonic crystal having semiconductor with direct bandgap, and electrical contacts form electrical biasing of p-n junction to provide emission of light by recombination of electrical carriers
Abstract: A volume-scalable, high-brightness, electrically driven visible light source comprises a three-dimensional photonic crystal (3DPC) comprising one or more direct bandgap semiconductors. The improved light emission performance of the invention is achieved based on the enhancement of radiative emission of light emitters placed inside a 3DPC due to the strong modification of the photonic density-of-states engendered by the 3DPC.
Use: As light source (claimed).
Advantage: The light source is scalable; has high brightness, and high efficiency; provides wavelength tenability; and achieves improved light emission performance.
Novelty: A light source comprises a three-dimensional photonic crystal having a photonic density of states, where the crystal contains at least one semiconductor with a direct bandgap and where at least one p-n junction (34) is located within the crystal; and electrical contacts produce electrical biasing of the p-n junction to provide emission of light (37) by recombination of electrical carriers at the p-n junction; where the emission comprises a light spectrum suitable for modification by the photonic density-of-states of the crystal.
