Vanadium oxide for infrared coatings and methods thereof

DWPI Title: Preparing crystalline vanadium oxide, involves annealing vanadium oxide precursor precursor at reduced oxygen molecule partial pressure and determining first temperature at which metastable and/or tetragonal vanadium oxide forms is present
Abstract: The present invention relates to vanadium oxide and methods of controlling reaction processes for making such materials (e.g., powders). In particular embodiments, the method includes control of oxygen partial pressure in order to kinetically control the oxidation species of the crystalline vanadium oxide material. Other methods, uses, systems, protocols, and coatings are also described.
Use: The methods are useful for preparing crystalline vanadium oxide (claimed) which is used as infrared polymer coatings e.g. smart windows, optical or field effect switches, waveguides, optical modulators, optical detectors, circuit components e.g. nonlinear circuit components, solid state sensors, memristors, catalysts and metamaterials.
Advantage: The methods: provide vanadium oxide predominantly as a single phase in crystalline form that displays good optical transmission in visible and near infrared ranges and as tetragonal form (above -70° C) that shows a very sharp decrease in the infrared spectrum; are simple and single annealing step (or heat treatment step) to obtain the desired material; allow for formation of the desired product at reduced oxygen molecule partial pressure and/or reduced annealing temperature; and provide environmentally-switched coating that is tailored to reduce heating due to sunlight exposure but still allow visible light transmission, hence coating can decouple solar illumination and heat to improve energy efficiency.
Novelty: Preparing (M1) crystalline vanadium oxide, comprises: (i) providing a vanadium oxide precursor; (ii) annealing the precursor at a reduced oxygen molecule partial pressure, thus preparing the crystalline vanadium oxide in tetragonal form; and (iii) determining a first temperature T1 at which a metastable vanadium oxide form and/or a tetragonal vanadium oxide form is present.
