Systems, methods and computer program products for electric grid control

DWPI Title: System for controlling power to electrical grid from distributed energy resources, has controller for outputting power command signal to individual power source, where system integrates tracking errors to control power source
Abstract: Systems, methods and computer program products for maintaining and controlling distributed energy resources (DERs), such as wind, solar, water and storage renewable energy resources, within an acceptable error margin are disclosed. The systems and processes control the energy output of these DERs in real time within the error margin.
Use: System for controlling power to an electrical grid from distributed energy resources. Uses include but are not limited to wind, solar, water and storage renewable energy resources.
Advantage: The system facilitates participation of a large number of diverse distributed energy resources in supporting grid services, enabling increased penetrations of renewable energy resources on the grid by reducing the need for utilities to maintain dedicated assets to provide grid services. The system promotes increasing renewable penetrations on the grid by eliminating the need for dedicated grid support services.
Novelty: The system has a controller (350) for receiving a power status comprising an indication of current power level of an individual power source. The controller outputs a power command signal to the individual power source, where the system integrates power output tracking errors to continuously re-assign and dynamically control the individual power source of distributed energy resources (320) to maintain an overall reference power output of distributed energy resources within a defined error margin. The power source is selected from a group consisting of solar, geothermal, wind, water, hydraulic and storage power sources that output energy to an electrical grid. The controller is selected from a group consisting of a proportional-integral controller and a proportional-integral-derivative controller. The operator is selected from a group consisting of utility, grid operator, independent system operator, regional transmission organization and electrical market operator.
