Systems and Methods for Fast Fault Detection and Protection Using Discrete Wavelet Transform

Patent Filing: 8/8/2023
Application Abstract: The present disclosure is generally directed to systems and methods to quickly protect power distribution systems, and is more particularly directed to systems and methods that use Discrete Wavelet Transform to identify a fault and fault location and to then isolate the fault section. TW relays have proven in recent years to be a fast and effective method on locating faults in transmission grids. Depending on the line-length, faults can be typically located between 1 and 5 milliseconds. The TW detection and identification method addresses the demanding time and functional constraints that TW-based protection schemes for power distribution systems require.
