Optical NAND gate
DWPI Title: Optical NAND gate for generating NAND function digital optical output from pair of digital optical inputs, has waveguide photo detector receiving logical AND function output from another electro absorption modulator
Abstract: An optical NAND gate is formed from two pair of optical waveguide devices on a substrate, with each pair of the optical waveguide devices consisting of an electroabsorption modulator and a photodetector. One pair of the optical waveguide devices is electrically connected in parallel to operate as an optical AND gate; and the other pair of the optical waveguide devices is connected in series to operate as an optical NOT gate (i.e. an optical inverter). The optical NAND gate utilizes two digital optical inputs and a continuous light input to provide a NAND function output. The optical NAND gate can be formed from III-V compound semiconductor layers which are epitaxially deposited on a III-V compound semiconductor substrate, and operates at a wavelength in the range of 0.8-2.0 μm.
Use: Optical NAND gate for generating a NAND function digital optical output from a pair of digital optical inputs.
Advantage: The gate provides for optical signal gain and regeneration, and allows gates to be interconnected together to providing a higher level of logic functionality for optical signal processing or optical computing, thus allowing a higher reverse-bias voltage change to be produced on the modulator, and hence reducing the optical power required for continuous light from the laser, and providing a higher operating speed for the gate.
Novelty: The gate has an optical AND gate that is formed on a substrate (12), where the NOT gate is provided with an electro absorption modulator (14) and a waveguide photo detector (16). The waveguide photo detector receives a logical AND function output (120) from another electro absorption modulator (36), and generates photocurrent signal that modulates absorption of the former electro absorption modulator receiving an input (100) of continuous light to convert the continuous light input into a digital optical output of the NAND gate.
