Micromagnet PUF readout using a quantum diamond microscope

DWPI Title: Method for reading a physically unclonable function i.e. physical entity inclined on substrate for tagging unpowered devices, involves creating magnetization map of physically unclonable function from signal output by quantum diamond microscope
Abstract: A physically unclonable function (PUF) and a method of reading it are provided. The PUF is constituted by a microfabricated array of randomly polarized micromagnets disposed on a substrate. The PUF can be read by creating a magnetization map of the PUF from the signal output of a quantum diamond microscope (QDM) and converting the magnetization map to a numerical sequence.
Use: Method for reading a physically unclonable function i.e. physical entity inclined on a substrate for tagging unpowered devices. Can also be used for underground railway tickets, bank cards and identification (ID) cards.
Advantage: The method enables reading PUF for providing hardware security against counterfeiting and realizing random, uncontrollable, and robust individual magnetization state of each micromagnet against external influences such as ambient magnetic field and temperature.
Novelty: The method involves creating a magnetization map of a physically unclonable function (PUF) from a signal output by a quantum diamond microscope (QDM). Micromagnets are arranged in an array with mutually orthogonal primary and secondary axes. Polarities of cells are determined. A magnetic bias field is automatically optimized before creation to lie along an axis selected from four possible NV axes so that there is one selected axis and three non-selected axes. Degeneracy of the signals from NVs aligned along the non-selected axes is utilized as an indication that the magnetic bias field is aligned along the selected axis.
