Magneto-optical sensor for magnetic field measurement

DWPI Title: Magneto-optical sensor such as B-dot probes for measuring magnetic field or electrical current flow in a vaccum transmission line of a pulsed power accelerator, has photodetector that measures intensity of transmitted light beam
Abstract: A magneto-optical sensor can be used to measure electrical current with a very narrow pulse width as sensed by the magnetic field in the transmission line region of a pulsed power accelerator. Pulsed power accelerator experimental results agreed remarkably well with the Faraday effect theory, device physical model, and reference electrical current shunt data.
Use: Magneto-optical sensor such as B-dot probes and Rogowski coils for measuring magnetic field or electrical current flow in a vaccum transmission line of a pulsed power accelerator.
Advantage: The method uses a fiber coupled laser beam with a rare-earth element crystal sensor that is highly resistant to electromagnetic interference and does not require an external calibration.
Novelty: The sensor has a linear polarizer producing a linearly polarized light beam from a light beam. A magneto-optical material rotates the polarization of the beam that propagates along an optical axis of the material to provide a rotated beam whose rotation is dependent upon the strength of a magnetic field applied parallel to the optical axis. Another polarizer transmits the light beam based on the rotation of the polarization by the material. A photodetector measures the intensity of the transmitted beam. The material comprises a rare-earth-doped glass or rare- earth garnet crystal.
