Isostatic pressure spark plasma sintering (IP-SPS) net shaping of components using nanostructured materials
DWPI Title: Method for forming consolidated component having complex shape, involves surrounding component placed in chamber with medium, and applying pressure and heat or electricity into chamber to process component to form consolidated component
Use: Method for forming consolidated component having complex shape used in biomedical industry, aerospace industry, defense industry and automotive industry.
Advantage: The method provides improved net shaping of components using at least one of nanostructured materials, ultrafine grained materials, or micro structured materials.
Novelty: The method involves providing a first component (110) having a first shape similar to a complex shape. The first component is placed in a chamber (104) and the first component is surrounded with a medium (112). The pressure and heat or electricity are applied into the chamber to process the first component to form a consolidated component having the complex shape. The medium includes a spherical powder. The pressure application includes applying the pressure uniaxially to the medium such that the medium applies isostatic pressure or quasi-isostatic pressure to the first component.
