High reliability low jitter pulse generator
DWPI Title: Axisymmetric apparatus i.e. trigger pulser, for generating pulses for large pulsed-power driver, has voltage and ground electrodes between which laser spark gaps are formed, and set of insulated connectors connected to voltage electrode
Abstract: A method and concomitant apparatus for generating pulses comprising providing a laser light source, disposing a voltage electrode between ground electrodes, generating laser sparks using the laser light source via laser spark gaps between the voltage electrode and the ground electrodes, and outputting pulses via one or more insulated ground connectors connected to the voltage electrode.
Use: Axisymmetric apparatus i.e. trigger pulser, for generating pulses for a large pulsed-power driver.
Advantage: The pulser provides unique switch geometry coupled with low-inductance capacitive energy store, and provides a fast-rising high voltage pulse into a low impedance load. The pulser provides low jitter and fast rise time with a low prefire probability so as to make the pulser to be used effectively in a large pulsed-power driver as the primary trigger generator.
Novelty: The apparatus i.e. trigger pulser (10), has a high voltage electrode (16) placed between ground electrodes, where laser spark gaps are formed between the voltage electrode and the ground electrodes, and within which laser sparks (14) are generated by a laser light source. A set of insulated ground output connectors (18) is connected to the voltage electrode via which pulses are generated. An isolating inductor is supplied by two or more insulated ground connectors. A focal lens passes the laser beam (12) to the spark gaps, where length of the lens is between 300 and 700 mm.
