Graphics processing unit-assisted lossless decompression

DWPI Title: Graphics processing unit for decompressing data, has unit for comparing checksum computed for data packet with checksum computed for data packet prior to being subjected to compression algorithm, and unit for outputting signal
Abstract: Systems and methods for decompressing compressed data that has been compressed by way of a lossless compression algorithm are described herein. In a general embodiment, a graphics processing unit (GPU) is programmed to receive compressed data packets and decompress such packets in parallel. The compressed data packets are compressed representations of an image, and the lossless compression algorithm is a Rice compression algorithm.
Use: Graphics processing unit for decompressing compressed data.
Advantage: The unit reduces decompression latency for stream of compressed data packets to be decompressed in uninterrupted fashion.
Novelty: The unit (106) has a decompressing unit for decompressing compressed data packets to generate de-mapped data packets. A comparing unit compares checksum computed for a de-mapped data packet with the checksum computed for the de-mapped data packet prior to being subjected to a lossless compression algorithm. An output unit outputs a signal responsive to the comparing that is indicative of whether or not the checksum computed for the de-mapped data packet is equivalent to the checksum computed for the de-mapped data packet prior to being subjected to the lossless compression algorithm.
