Deterrence of device counterfeiting, cloning, and subversion by substitution using hardware fingerprinting

DWPI Title: Computing device for deterrence of device cloning, counterfeiting and subversion, has decryptor for receiving authentication challenge encrypted with public key and outputting response to authentication challenge decrypted with private key
Abstract: Deterrence of device subversion by substitution may be achieved by including a cryptographic fingerprint unit within a computing device for authenticating a hardware platform of the computing device. The cryptographic fingerprint unit includes a physically unclonable function (“PUF”) circuit disposed in or on the hardware platform. The PUF circuit is used to generate a PUF value. A key generator is coupled to generate a private key and a public key based on the PUF value while a decryptor is coupled to receive an authentication challenge posed to the computing device and encrypted with the public key and coupled to output a response to the authentication challenge decrypted with the private key.
Use: Computing device for deterrence of device cloning, counterfeiting and subversion.
Advantage: The random PUF output can be subsequently used to generate the device fingerprint that can be authenticated at any time during deployment phase of a component life cycle using a cryptographic challenge/response protocol.
Novelty: The device has a cryptographic fingerprint unit (800) for authenticating a hardware platform. The fingerprint unit has a physically unclonable function (PUF) circuit (805) outputting a PUF value. Programmable PUF perturbation devices (825) are coupled to signal paths within the PUF circuit. A key generator (815) generates a private key and a public key based on the PUF value. A decryptor (820) receives an authentication challenge posed to the device and encrypted with the public key and coupled to output a response to the authentication challenge decrypted with the private key.
