Concurrent signal combining and channel estimation in digital communications

DWPI Title: Digital communication signal decoding apparatus of single input multiple output communication system, estimates time delay and phase parameters associated with transmission of communication signal based on sets of symbol estimates
Abstract: In the reception of digital information transmitted on a communication channel, a characteristic exhibited by the communication channel during transmission of the digital information is estimated based on a communication signal that represents the digital information and has been received via the communication channel. Concurrently with the estimating, the communication signal is used to decide what digital information was transmitted.
Use: Digital communication signal decoding apparatus e.g. digital communication receiver of single input multiple output (SIMO) communication system.
Advantage: The effective signal to noise ratio at the output of the correlators can be increased and the instantaneous estimates of both symbol time and phase can be improved hence increasing the overall performance of delay and phase locked loop.
Novelty: The apparatus has an input for receiving digital communication signal associated with a single user through several communication channels. A decoder receives the communication signal and produces sets of symbol estimates in response to the communication signal. Time delay processor (125) and phase processor (124) estimates a time delay parameter and a phase parameter associated with transmission of the communication signal based on sets of symbol estimates.
