Application Abstract: A mechanical metamaterial sensor comprises interpenetrating lattices (IPLs) of two or more interwoven lattices with separate sets of features that interact with separate sets of features that interact with each other either through a separation distance or through contact. By interpenetrating the lattices together, a new range of coupled electrical and physical properties can be exploited to obtain information from the structure. The invention can be instantiated as a conventionally or additively manufactured interpenetrating lattice metamaterial, or through conventionally manufactured honeycomb-type structures. The interpenetrating lattice can alternatively be configured to provide an actuator or energy harvester. |
