Abstract: Metal nanostructures formed by photocatalytic interfacial synthesis using a porphyrin-stabilized emulsion template and the method for making the nanostructures. Catalyst-seeded emulsion droplets are employed as templates for hollow-nanoshell growth. The hollow metal nanospheres may be formed with or without inclusions of other materials.
Use: Manufacture of metal nanoshell.
Advantage: The metal nanoshell is economically manufactured with low density, large surface area and favorable optical property.
Novelty: An emulsion comprising lipoporphyrin-stabilized nanodroplets is formed. The emulsion comprises photocatalytic lipoporphyrin, water and an organic liquid. A seed metal ion and an electron donor species are added to emulsion and illuminated. The excited photocatalytic lipoporphyrin is reacted with electron donor species to form a reduced photocatalytic lipoporphyrin, seed metal ion is reduced to form a seed metal nanoparticles at water/organic liquid interface. A shell metal ion is added and catalytically reduced to form a metallic nanoshell.
