Fluid blade disablement tool

DWPI Title: Fluid blade disablement tool for use by bomb technician, to disrupt e.g. improved explosive device, has detonating unit positioned for detonation of explosive, and container containing fluid
Abstract: A fluid blade disablement (FBD) tool that forms both a focused fluid projectile that resembles a blade, which can provide precision penetration of a barrier wall, and a broad fluid projectile that functions substantially like a hammer, which can produce general disruption of structures behind the barrier wall. Embodiments of the FBD tool comprise a container capable of holding fluid, an explosive assembly which is positioned within the container and which comprises an explosive holder and explosive, and a means for detonating. The container has a concavity on the side adjacent to the exposed surface of the explosive. The position of the concavity relative to the explosive and its construction of materials with thicknesses that facilitate inversion and/or rupture of the concavity wall enable the formation of a sharp and coherent blade of fluid advancing ahead of the detonation gases.
Use: Fluid blade disablement (FBD) tool for use by emergency response personnel and bomb technicians, to disable improved explosive device (IED) or weapon of mass destruction (WMD) device.
Advantage: The tool allows effective tamping of a stronger portion of the container to increase efficiency of a fluid blade device by preventing venting of detonation gases for a longer time, so as to force the fluid toward an intended target. The tool can reduce direct contact of the container with environmental surfaces, and legs provide more uniform tamping in different applications, thus providing uniform and predictable deposition of explosive energy into formation of a fluid blade. The fluid blade can quickly and effectively cut a hole through a barrier wall and begin disruption of structures and/or materials that are placed behind the barrier wall.
Novelty: The tool has a container containing fluid, where the container includes a concavity (16) in a front container side. The concavity includes concavity wall thickness sufficiently thin to allow partial inversion of a curvature of bottom of the concavity. An explosive assembly comprises an explosive holder (20) and explosive held by the explosive holder. A front side of the explosive is oriented toward the concavity. A cavity for the fluid is located between a set of walls of the container and the front side of explosive. A detonating unit is positioned for detonation of the explosive.
