Structure function monitor
DWPI Title: Electromagnetic wave phase recovery method for use in refractive medium e.g. air, involves generating structure function of refractive medium by analyzing unwrapped retrieved phase of received light
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for a structure function monitor provide for generation of parameters characterizing a refractive medium. In an embodiment, a structure function monitor acquires images of a pupil plane and an image plane and, from these images, retrieves the phase over an aperture, unwraps the retrieved phase, and analyzes the unwrapped retrieved phase. In an embodiment, analysis yields atmospheric parameters measured at spatial scales from zero to the diameter of a telescope used to collect light from a source.
Use: For measuring turbulence in refractive medium e.g. air, water and also to measure perturbation of wavefront at the entrance of aperture of an imaging device such as telescope.
Advantage: The turbulence is characterized in real time and wavefront phase correction data is provided in real time. The perturbations can be measured on all spatial scales defined by the aperture.
Novelty: The images of pupil plane and image plane from the received light having phase and amplitude at an aperture corresponding to pupil plane is acquired and the phase over the aperture is retrieved. The unwrapped retrieved phase is analyzed to generate a structure function of the refractive medium.
