Technique for identifying, tracing, or tracking objects in image data

DWPI Title: Computer implemented method for identifying, tracing and tracking objects in video sequence in e.g. robotics, involves rendering polygon contour, and iteratively refining polygon contour to trace object in frame
Abstract: A technique for computer vision uses a polygon contour to trace an object. The technique includes rendering a polygon contour superimposed over a first frame of image data. The polygon contour is iteratively refined to more accurately trace the object within the first frame after each iteration. The refinement includes computing image energies along lengths of contour lines of the polygon contour and adjusting positions of the contour lines based at least in part on the image energies.
Use: Computer implemented method for identifying, tracing and tracking objects in image data i.e. video sequence, in computer vision applications such as robotics, surveillance and image editing. Can also be used for views from multiple cameras and multi-dimensional data from multi-dimensional (3D) scanners.
Advantage: The method enables attracting line nodes to geometric corners or points on a boundary of the objects to be traced using a polygon snake algorithm, so that the contour lines can theoretically achieve zero image energy states in reduced line jitter and increased image stability of the polygon contour. The method enables iteratively refining the polygon contour, so that the polygon snake algorithm has encountered a number of break conditions resulting in the creation of the contour lines, thus enabling the polygon contour to more accurately trace object.
Novelty: The method involves rendering a polygon contour superimposed over a frame of image data. Image energies are computed along lengths of contour lines (210, 210A, 210B) of the contour. Positions of the lines are adjusted based on the energies. Maximal breaking stress asserted on a given contour line is determined. Determination is made to check whether the breaking stress exceeds a breaking threshold. The given contour line is broken into the lines when the breaking stress exceeds the threshold. The contour is iteratively refined to trace an object (200) in the frame.
