Tracking moving radar targets with parallel, velocity-tuned filters

DWPI Title: Radar data processing apparatus for monitoring motion of e.g. vehicle in airborne radar system, has tracker that performs tracking of motion of target based on target image information when velocity of target is within velocity range
Abstract: Radar data associated with radar illumination of a movable target is processed to monitor motion of the target. A plurality of filter operations are performed in parallel on the radar data so that each filter operation produces target image information. The filter operations are defined to have respectively corresponding velocity ranges that differ from one another. The target image information produced by one of the filter operations represents the target more accurately than the target image information produced by the remainder of the filter operations when a current velocity of the target is within the velocity range associated with the one filter operation. In response to the current velocity of the target being within the velocity range associated with the one filter operation, motion of the target is tracked based on the target image information produced by the one filter operation.
Use: Radar data processing apparatus for monitoring motion of moving target e.g. vehicle in airborne radar system.
Advantage: The apparatus permits tracking of mobile high-value targets over realistic velocity changes such as experienced by a vehicle while efficiently maneuvering in traffic. Focusing is improved since processing filters include additional functionality to receive target state vector information from the tracking stage. Tracking performance is enhanced since the tracking filter implements a tracking algorithm that uses the received information.
Novelty: The processing apparatus has processing filters (1-3) that process radar data (11) provided by a radar front end apparatus (20), and produce target image information in response to the received radar data. A tracker (23) is coupled to the processing filters, and performs tracking of motion of a target based on target image information produced by one processing filter when the current velocity of the target is within the velocity range associated with the processing filter.
