Scannerless loss modulated flash color range imaging

DWPI Title: Scanner less loss modulated flash color range imaging apparatus for use in e.g. facial recognition application, has array detector detecting backscattered phase delayed light, and generating electrical output signal
Abstract: Scannerless loss modulated flash color range imaging methods and apparatus are disclosed for producing three dimensional (3D) images of a target within a scene. Apparatus and methods according to the present invention comprise a light source providing at least three wavelengths (passbands) of illumination that are each loss modulated, phase delayed and simultaneously directed to illuminate the target. Phase delayed light backscattered from the target is spectrally filtered, demodulated and imaged by a planar detector array. Images of the intensity distributions for the selected wavelengths are obtained under modulated and unmodulated (dc) illumination of the target, and the information contained in the images combined to produce a 3D image of the target.
Use: Scanner less loss modulated flash color range imaging apparatus for providing a three-dimensional (3D) image of a target i.e. subject within a field of view, for facial recognition application, industrial inspection and measurement application, robotic vision application, collision avoidance application, automated rendezvous and docking application and high speed three dimensional target imaging.
Advantage: The array detector generates the electrical output signal containing information, thus effectively providing three-dimensional image of the target. The configuration of the apparatus reduces the effect of random system noise.
Novelty: The apparatus (200) has a loss modulator (204) modulated at a frequency in response to a sinusoidal modulation signal. The modulator transmits light from a light source (202) e.g. xenon flash lamp, to a delay line (208a), and transmits backscattered phase delayed light (214) from a target (224) i.e. subject. The modulator provides a loss in the transmission of light form the light source and delayed light being range and phase delay dependent. An array detector (222) detects the delayed light from the target and transmitted through the modulator, and generates an electrical output signal.
