Detection of electrophilic and nucleophilic chemical agents
DWPI Title: New precursor sensor molecule for detecting the presence of e.g. hazardous chemical and biological materials in fluid samples
Abstract: A "real time" method for detecting electrophilic and nucleophilic species generally by employing tunable, precursor sensor materials that mimic the physiological interaction of these agents to form highly florescent berberine-type alkaloids that can be easily and rapidly detected. These novel precursor sensor materials can be tuned for reaction with both electrophilic (chemical species, toxins) and nucleophilic (proteins and other biological molecules) species.
Use: A precursor sensor molecule for reacting with electrophilic species (e.g. chemical species or toxins) and nucleophilic species (e.g. amino acids, peptides, or proteins) for forming highly fluorescent compounds, and for detecting the presence of hazardous chemical and biological materials or warfare agents in fluid samples e.g. sewage or industrial discharges.
Advantage: The precursor sensor molecule is capable of detecting very low concentrations of hazardous chemical and biological materials. In use, the precursor sensor molecule mimics the physiological interaction of warfare agents to form highly fluorescent berberine-type alkaloids that can be easily and rapidly detected.
Novelty: A precursor sensor molecule is new.
