Regenerable particulate filter
DWPI Title: Diesel-engine exhaust gases stream particulates removing method, involves fabricating three-dimensional, porous, periodically-structured filter, and situating filter such that fluid flow from exhaust stream passes through filter
Abstract: A method of making a three-dimensional lattice structure, such as a filter used to remove particulates from a gas stream, where the physical lattice structure is designed utilizing software simulation from pre-defined mass transfer and flow characteristics and the designed lattice structure is fabricated using a free-form fabrication manufacturing technique, where the periodic lattice structure is comprised of individual geometric elements.
Use: Method for removing particulates of diesel-engine exhaust gas stream.
Advantage: The method can achieve fabrication of the lattice structure with a high surface to volume ratio to maintain high permeability and low pressure drop, and prevents the particulates from passing through the lattice structure. The method allows improving mass transfer coefficients.
Novelty: The method involves fabricating a three-dimensional, porous, periodically-structured filter using a free-form fabrication manufacturing technique i.e. robocasting technique, where the filter comprises individual geometric elements. Materials with designed electrical resistivity characteristics are provided in a face-centered-cubic type lattice structure, where the materials comprise defined compositions of a material selected from co-sinterable and insulating materials. The filter is situated such that fluid flow from an exhaust stream containing particulates passes through the filter.
