Mobile computing device configured to compute irradiance, glint, and glare of the sun
DWPI Title: Mobile computing device for computing irradiance, glint or glare of sun has memory with display component which causes graphic to display on display screen based on irradiance incident on surface of entity or glint/glare emitted from entity
Abstract: Described herein are technologies pertaining to computing the solar irradiance distribution on a surface of a receiver in a concentrating solar power system or glint/glare emitted from a reflective entity. A mobile computing device includes at least one camera that captures images of the Sun and the entity of interest, wherein the images have pluralities of pixels having respective pluralities of intensity values. Based upon the intensity values of the pixels in the respective images, the solar irradiance distribution on the surface of the entity or glint/glare corresponding to the entity is computed by the mobile computing device.
Use: Mobile computing device for computing irradiance, glint or glare of sun. Uses include but are not limited for a solar power plant, a wind turbines, and a geothermal power systems.
Advantage: By computing the value that is indicative of glint/glare emitted from the entity, for instance, governmental and/or worker safety regulations may require employees, and public entities restrictions or warnings of ocular hazards that may exist due to solar reflections, and for instance, fields of collectors may emit glint/glare that may cause ocular damage to a pilot or a person in a vehicle.
Novelty: The device (102) has a memory (212) with components which are executed by a processor (210). An image capture component (214) receives an indication that a user has interacted with the input mechanism (206), and causes the camera (202) to capture a first electronic image. A receiver component (216) receives an image of the sun with a second pixels. A calculator component (218) computes the value that is indicative of irradiance incident on a surface of an entity or glint/glare emitted from the entity. A display component causes the graphic to be displayed on the display screen (204).
