Method for operating homogeneous charge compression ignition engines using conventional gasoline
DWPI Title: Method for reducing heat release rate in e.g. spark-ignition engine using gasoline, involves providing single-stage fuel to engine such that partially stratified fuel charge produces range of fuel concentrations and auto-ignition of charge
Abstract: A method for the operation of homogeneous charge compression ignition engines (HCCI) using gasoline or similar single-stage ignition fuels. Partial fuel stratification (PFS), intake pressure boosting and controlled BDC-intake temperatures, typically in the range of 95° C. to about 125° C., are used to reduce combustion pressure rise rates (PRR), and therefore, the knocking propensity of homogeneous charge compression ignition engines operating on gasoline or similar fuels.
Use: Method for reducing a heat release rate in a homogeneous charge compression ignition engine e.g. spark-ignition engine and diesel engine, using fuels e.g. single-stage ignition fuel such as gasoline, blends of gasoline and ethanol, iso-octane, iso-pentanol, fuels derived from petroleum feed stock, gas, fuels from biological sources, fuels from renewable sources, mixtures of fuels from petroleum and biological sources or mixtures of fuels derived from petroleum and renewable sources (all claimed), and diesel.
Advantage: The single-stage fuel is provided to the homogeneous charge compression ignition engine in such a manner that the partially stratified fuel charge is created to produce the range of fuel concentrations and sequential auto-ignition of the fuel charge, thus reducing heat release rate in homogeneous charge compression ignition engine using the fuels that exhibit single-stage ignition behavior for fueling homogeneous charge compression ignition engine without the need for modification of the homogeneous charge compression ignition engine configurations.
Novelty: The method involves creating a partially stratified fuel charge at an elevated intake pressure and a controlled bottom dead center intake temperature. A single-stage fuel e.g. mixture of single-stage fuel and air, is provided to the homogeneous charge compression ignition engine in such a manner that a partially stratified fuel charge is created to produce a range of fuel concentrations and auto-ignition of the fuel charge. The partially stratified fuel charge is supplied to an engine with an intake pressure ranging from 1.6-2.8 bar.
