Method of making nanostructured glass-ceramic waste forms

DWPI Title: Forming waste form comprises sorbing hazardous material in nanopores of nanoporous material, fixing sorbed hazardous material, mixing nanoporous material with glass-forming component, and vitrifying sorbed anionic hazardous material
Abstract: A waste form for and a method of rendering hazardous materials less dangerous is disclosed that includes fixing the hazardous material in nanopores of a nanoporous material, reacting the trapped hazardous material to render it less volatile/soluble, and vitrifying the nanoporous material containing the less volatile/soluble hazardous material.
Use: The method is useful for forming waste form.
Advantage: The method: produces the waste form in a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly manner; and does not require silver for immobilizing iodine.
Novelty: Forming waste form, comprises (a) sorbing a hazardous material in nanopores of a nanoporous material, (b) fixing the sorbed hazardous material with an alkaline reagent or alkaline silicate for converting it to less volatile or soluble form by converting the sorbed hazardous material into a sorbed anionic hazardous material, (c) mixing the nanoporous material with a glass-forming component, and (d) vitrifying the sorbed anionic hazardous material to form the waste form comprising nanometer precipitates containing hazardous material.
