Seal assembly with anti-rotation pin for high pressure supercritical fluids

DWPI Title: Self adjusting seal assembly for sealing e.g. turbine for refrigeration applications, has seal face plate covering opening positioned adjacent to seal housing and adjacent to seal ring for retaining ring and pin in seal pocket
Abstract: A seal assembly for sealing a machine with a first chamber and a second chamber is provided. A rotating shaft extends through the first and second chambers, and rotates therein. The seal assembly has a seal housing, a seal ring and a seal pin. The seal housing is positionable in the machine housing. The seal housing has a seal pocket extending into a fluid side thereof, and a housing receptacle extending into an inner diameter thereof at the seal pocket. The seal ring is positionable in the seal pocket of the seal housing for forming a seal therewith. The seal ring has a ring receptacle extending into an outer diameter thereof. The ring receptacle is positionable adjacent to the housing receptacle for defining a pin hole therebetween. The seal pin is loosely positionable in the pin hole whereby movement about the seal ring is accommodated while preventing rotation thereof.
Use: Self adjusting seal assembly for sealing a turbo machine e.g. turbine, centrifugal pump and compressor machine for various applications. Uses include but are not limited to power conversion applications, refrigeration applications, fluid pumping applications, carbon capture applications and chemical processing applications.
Advantage: The assembly enables urging of the seal ring against the seal housing so as to prevent bypass leakage between the seal ring and an oversized pocket of the seal housing. The assembly creates low pressure regions in the machine so as to reduce windage losses, thus improving efficiency of the assembly. The pin can optionally be positioned between the seal ring and the seal housing so as to prevent rotation of the seal pin.
Novelty: The assembly (202) has a seal housing (222) positioned in a machine housing with a rotating shaft (204) through the machine housing. A seal pocket (234) opening faces a chamber. The seal housing includes a housing receptacle (251) extending into the seal housing from inner diameter (phi-ID) of the seal housing at the seal pocket. A seal face plate covers the opening positioned adjacent to the seal housing on a fluid side of the seal housing with the rotating shaft. The face plate is positioned adjacent to a seal ring (224) for retaining the seal ring and a seal pin (250) in the seal pocket.
