Plasma driven neutron/gamma generator

DWPI Title: Apparatus for generating neutrons and gamma rays for detecting special nuclear material (SNM) concealed in cargo, has gas source connected to plasma chamber to deliver hydrogen, deuterium and tritium to plasma chamber
Use: Apparatus for generating neutrons and gamma rays for detecting SNM concealed in cargo. Can also be used in oil-well logging, medical imaging and mechanical inspection.
Advantage: The generation of neutrons and gamma rays can be performed based on hydrogen, deuterium and tritium ions. The ion source plasma can be generated by radio frequency induction discharge to obtain high percentage of desired atomic ion species with high current density. The neutron/gamma generator for ion beam formation can be designed efficiently at low cost and reduced size and can be operated at high pressures.
Novelty: A plasma chamber (12) has a target (18) positioned at one end (15) and comprises a material to generate neutrons or gamma rays when stuck by hydrogen, deuterium and tritium ions. The plasma chamber includes several permanent magnets (28) arranged around the target which is connected to high voltage line (20). A gas source (14) is connected to the plasma chamber to deliver hydrogen, deuterium and tritium to the plasma chamber.
