Programmable electroacoustic filter apparatus and method for its manufacture

DWPI Title: Acoustically coupled frequency selective piezoelectric radio frequency device for communication applications, has set of electrodes including additional array in which electrodes are reconfigurable by changing selection of electrodes
Abstract: An acoustically coupled frequency selective radio frequency (RF) device is provided. The device includes a piezoelectric substrate overlain by a plurality of electrodes. The device further includes a pair of RF input terminals at least one of which is electrically connected to at least one of the electrodes, and a pair of output RF terminals, at least one of which is electrically connected to at least one other of the electrodes. At least one of the electrodes is electromechanically reconfigurable between a state in which it is closer to a face of the piezoelectric substrate and at least one state in which it is farther from the face of the piezoelectric substrate.
Use: Acoustically coupled frequency selective piezoelectric radio frequency device for communication applications.
Advantage: The device emits a beam that can avoid contact with the actuation electrodes to reduce charging failures of a switch. The switch body is fabricated from thick gold for enhancing low-loss and high contact forces, and includes high-resistivity tantalum nitride resistor lines for improving isolation between the bias and RF signals. The device ensures increased gap between an edge of a reflector unit cell and a facing edge of a transducer unit cell, while maintaining same design parameters in the reflector, thus increasing cavity length to shift resonant frequency of the device without changing a Q-factor. The device is designed such that capacitive switched fingers can be deployed in a large distributed array that is tolerant of individual switch failures.
Novelty: The device has a set of elongate electrodes placed along direction parallel to a face of a substrate and perpendicular to a propagation axis. The set of electrodes include an input electrode array electrically connected to an input radio frequency (RF) terminal and an output electrode array electrically connected to an output RF terminal. The set of electrodes include an additional array in which the electrodes are individually selectable and are reconfigurable by changing the selection of electrodes to be placed in a state that is closer to the substrate face.
