Thermal swing reactor including a multi-flight auger

DWPI Title: Thermal swing reactor apparatus of solar reactor system used in solar power system, has auger that comprises flight that transports particles from particle collection zone to high temperature zone when casing is rotated
Abstract: A thermal swing reactor including a multi-flight auger and methods for solar thermochemical reactions are disclosed. The reactor includes a multi-flight auger having different helix portions having different pitch. Embodiments of reactors include at least two distinct reactor portions between which there is at least a pressure differential. In embodiments, reactive particles are exchanged between portions during a reaction cycle to thermally reduce the particles at first conditions and oxidize the particles at second conditions to produce chemical work from heat.
Use: Thermal swing reactor apparatus of solar reactor system (claimed) used in solar power system for solar thermochemical hydrogen and fuel production, carbon dioxide and water splitting operations, solar augmentation of fossil fuel power plants, and industrial chemical operations.
Advantage: The reactor conveys solid particulate materials between process volumes operating at different temperatures while conveying solid particulate materials between process volumes operating at different temperatures. The heat between material flows can be recovered. The processing energy efficiency of swing reactor is improved.
Novelty: The apparatus has a particle transport component (26) that moves particles from the first reaction zone to second reaction zone. The first reaction zone comprises window (38) for receiving sunlight from sunlight source and a high temperature zone (42) heated by the received sunlight. The first reaction zone comprises an auger (34) within casing. The auger comprises flight that transports particles from particle collection zone (46) to the high temperature zone when the casing (32) is rotated.
