Abstract: The present invention relates to the design and manufacture of an ignitable solid, where the solid is composed of an array of ignitable regions. In some examples, the array provides a three-dimensional periodic arrangement of such ignitable regions. The ignitable region can have any useful geometry and geometric arrangement within the solid, and methods of making such regions are also described herein.
Use: Ignitable solid is used in optical switch (claimed), heat source, igniter, decoy flare, fuse, solder source, brazing source, etc.
Advantage: The ignitable solid has controlled spacing and dimension. The use of reactants and reaction products provides improved beam handling and safety.
Novelty: An ignitable solid (1000) comprises a three-dimensional scaffold, and several ignitable regions. Each ignitable region is arranged within the scaffold and at least one ignitable region comprises a reactant (r1). The ignitable regions forms a three-dimensional array (1001) arranged within the scaffold. Each of the ignitable regions has a dimension of 10 nm-10 μ m and each center-to-center spacing between two ignitable regions is of 10 nm-10 μ m. The three-dimensional array extends in a pattern along x-, y-, and z-axes within the scaffold.
