Shaped fiber composites
DWPI Title: Composite article used in e.g. structural components for aircraft, comprises polymer matrix, and fibers embedded in matrix in which fibers have interlocking feature having irregular protrusions that interlock adjoining fibers to one another
Abstract: A composite article is disclosed that has non-circular fibers embedded in a polymer matrix. The composite article has improved damage tolerance, toughness, bending, and impact resistance compared to composites having traditional round fibers.
Use: The composite article is useful in structural components for aircraft, building, military, automotive applications, ballistic resistant materials, sporting goods, home appliances pressure vessels, storage tanks, bridges, boat and scull hulls, sailboats, rowing shells, bicycle and motorcycle frames and components, swimming pools, space craft including satellites, concrete, heat shields, fuselages, disk brake systems, pipes and industrial materials, trains, electronic devices and equipment, musical instruments, audio components, furniture, medical equipment, windmills, civil engineering and construction related materials.
Advantage: The composite article: exhibits increased property tailorability, toughness, decreased delamination potential, decreased composite weight, maximized mechanical interlocking, bending and impact resistance as compared to composites having conventional round fibers; provides the stronger fiber-resin adhesion that requires less resin and fewer fibers resulting in lighter weight and stronger composites; and utilizes shaped fibers that are subjected to damage and the fracture propagation between fibers is decreased when subjected to load, thus increasing the structures damage tolerance.
Novelty: Composite article (10) comprises: a polymer matrix (14); and fibers (12) embedded in the matrix, where the fibers comprise an interlocking feature that interlock adjoining fibers to one another and the interlocking feature comprises irregular protrusions, or a protrusion terminated with an end cap, an anchor, a channel or an opening.
