Image registration via optimization over disjoint image regions
DWPI Title: Method for image registration executed by processor of computing device used in surveillance application, involves optimizing metric over set of arbitrarily-shaped disjoint regions to transform to register target image with base image
Abstract: Technologies pertaining to registering a target image with a base image are described. In a general embodiment, the base image is selected from a set of images, and the target image is an image in the set of images that is to be registered to the base image. A set of disjoint regions of the target image is selected, and a transform to be applied to the target image is computed based on the optimization of a metric over the selected set of disjoint regions. The transform is applied to the target image so as to register the target image with the base image.
Use: Method for image registration executed by processor of computing device (claimed) used in surveillance application. Can also be used in medical imaging e.g. computed tomography imaging, radiometric imaging, space or orbital photography, inspection of devices, photogrammetric applications.
Advantage: The employment of the disjoint set to compute the optimization metric facilitates choosing a sub-region of a scene for restoration, thus allowing the algorithm to avoid registration error due to parallax or other sources of error incurred by use of an entire image. The base image selection, selection of the disjoint set of image regions, computation of the optimization metric over the disjoint set of image regions, thus the error is effectively minimized by the performance of optimization. The optimizer component can utilize an optimization framework in connection with setting parameters of the transform for use when registering the target image with the base image, thus minimizing error during registration.
Novelty: The method involves receiving a set of images (104). The set of images has a base image (112) and a target image (114) that is registered with the base image. The target image has a pixel. The target image is divided into arbitrarily-shaped disjoint regions. The set of disjoint regions are selected from arbitrarily-shaped disjoint regions. The metric over the set of arbitrarily-shaped disjoint regions are optimized to compute a transform and the transform is usable to register the target image with the base image.
