Methods for operating solar-thermochemical processes

DWPI Title: Determining operating oxidation temperature in thermochemical reactor process by developing performance/efficiency map as function of reduction temperature, temperature swing, pressure swing, and recuperation efficiencies for use in a model
Abstract: Methods for controlling or operating solar thermochemical reactions process that maximize the two-step thermochemical energy cycle efficiency by a combination of pressure and temperature swing are disclosed.
Use: Determination of operating oxidation temperature in a thermochemical reactor process.
Advantage: The method maximizes the two-step thermochemical energy cycle efficiency by a combination of pressure and temperature swing.
Novelty: Operating oxidation temperature in thermochemical reactor process is determined by (a) selecting thermal reduction temperature for reactive oxide; (b) selecting operating pressure in thermal reduction step in containment vessel; (c) selecting solid-solid and gas-gas recuperation efficiency; (d) selecting initial oxidation temperature for feed stream having heat requirement for oxidizing feed stream; (e) iterating/repeating steps (a)-(d) to develop performance/efficiency map as a function of reduction temperature, temperature swing, pressure swing, and recuperation efficiencies; (f) embedding map into solar collection and heating system model to determine operating oxidation temperature; and (g) utilizing in thermochemical reactor by using solar radiation to heat and thermally reduce reactive oxide and moving reactive oxide into H2 production chamber operated at determined operating oxidation temperature by exposing chamber to pre-heated steam in a countercurrent flow arrangement.
