Material identification system

DWPI Title: Method for identifying material in water bottle using object scanning system, involves identifying material in object using estimated attenuations and known attenuation information for identifying material in object by computer system
Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying a material in an object. An image of the object generated from energy passing through the object is obtained by a computer system. The computer system estimates attenuations for pixels in a sensor system from the image of the object to form estimated attenuations. The estimated attenuations represent a loss of the energy that occurs from the energy passing through the object. The computer system also identifies the material in the object using the estimated attenuations and known attenuation information for identifying the material in the object.
Use: Method for identifying a material in an object i.e. water bottle, using an object scanning system.
Advantage: The method enables quickly and accurately identifying the material in the object than with a currently available X-ray scanning system.
Novelty: The method involves obtaining an image of an object (106) generated from energy passing through the object by a computer system. Attenuations for pixels in a sensor system are estimated from the image of the object to form estimated attenuations by the computer system, where the estimated attenuations represent loss of the energy that occurs from the energy passing through the object. Material (104) in the object is identified using the estimated attenuations and known attenuation information for identifying the material in the object by the computer system.
