Biochemical upgrading of high-protein biomass and grain products
DWPI Title: Upgrading biomass comprises e.g. pre-treating the biomass with acids, thus providing biocomponent comprising carbohydrate, and fermenting carbohydrates with first genetically engineered organism, thus providing first fermentation product
Abstract: The present invention relates to methods of upgrading biomass to provide useful chemical intermediates, fuels, amino acids, nutrients, etc. In particular examples, the biomass is a by-product of ethanol production and is mainly used as high-protein feed. Described herein are methods for upgrading such biomass, such as by implementing pre-treatment conditions and by employing fermentation conditions including modified organisms.
Use: The method is useful for: upgrading a biomass comprising distillers grain, an oilseed meal, a feed, or a cereal by-product (all claimed); upgrading biomass to provide useful chemical intermediates, fuels, amino acids, or nutrients.
Advantage: The method utilize genetically modified organisms that increases yield as compared to the wild-type strain.
Novelty: Upgrading (M1) a biomass, comprises e.g. (a) pre-treating the biomass with at least one acid, thus providing at least one biocomponent comprising at least one carbohydrate, (b) fermenting the carbohydrates with a first genetically engineered organism, thus providing a first fermentation product comprising an alcohol, where the first genetically engineered organism comprises Escherichia coli KO11, Escherichia coli LY01, Escherichia coli SZ110, Escherichia coli LY168, Zymomonas mobilis AX101, Saccharomyces cerevisiae 424A(LNH-ST), or Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 96581, (c) separating the alcohol from the first fermentation product, thus providing a separated fermentation portion, and (d) treating the separated fermentation portion with at least one enzyme, thus providing an enzymatically treated portion comprising an amino acid.
