Tag and seal employing a micromachine artifact

DWPI Title: Method for authenticating tamper resistant seal, involves executing optical pattern recognition algorithm on image data to identify any micromachine artifact matching predetermined shape
Abstract: A method and apparatus to authenticate a tamper resistant seal that includes a population of particles embedded in an adhesive, the population including at least one micromachine artifact of a predetermined physical shape.
Use: Method for authenticating tamper resistant seal with micromachine artifact embedded in adhesive by using reflective particle tag (RPT) technology.
Advantage: The changes in either a physical shape of a recognized micromachine artifact, a count of recognized micromachine artifacts or else location are automatically identified.
Novelty: The method involves illuminating (650) a portion of a seal containing a population of particles embedded in an adhesive matrix. The population includes micromachine artifact formed by a microelectronic and microelectromechanical technique to have a predetermined shape. The image data is collected (655) from the illuminated portion of the seal. An optical pattern recognition algorithm is executed (660) on image data to identify any micromachine artifact matching predetermined shape. The tamper resistant seal is identified by associating the seal with a record stored in a reference database.
