Muon detectors, systems and methods

DWPI Title: Method for facilitating X-ray imaging of subsurface of building using upward traveling muons, involves arranging muon detector for determining muon direction and trajectory with object, and creating image of object from detected muon
Abstract: A muon detector system capable of determining muon direction and flight trajectory or path is disclosed. The muon detector system includes scintillators for determining muon direction, and an array of muon detectors arranged in orthogonal layers for determining flight trajectory. The system can be used for tomographic and telescopic mode imaging, and may be used for imaging concealed and/or subterranean objects.
Use: Method for facilitating X-ray imaging of a subsurface of a building using upward traveling muons.
Advantage: The method enables providing a muon detector for subsurface imaging to accurately measure traveling direction of the muon so as to reduce imaging cost and increase access to targets of interest.
Novelty: The method involves arranging a muon detector (12) for determining muon direction and trajectory with an object such that muons passing through or around the object are detected by the detector. An image of the object is created from the detected muon, where the detector is placed above the object to detect upward traveling muons, the object is concealed from the detector and located below a ground. Density of the object is determined. Direction and trajectory of muons passing through the first and second detectors is determined.
