Filtration membranes

DWPI Title: Membrane assembly used in water filtration system comprises non-metallic, porous substrate, graphene oxide membrane and chemical linker interface including adhesion promoter and flux promoter including silane molecules
Abstract: A membrane assembly is provided. The membrane assembly includes a non-metallic, porous substrate. A graphene oxide membrane is formed over the non-metallic, porous substrate. A chemical linker interface covalently binds the graphene oxide membrane to the non-metallic, porous substrate.
Use: The assembly is useful in water filtration system (claimed).
Advantage: The assembly: utilizes graphene oxide nanosheets within the membranes and membrane assemblies that provide chlorine tolerance and have biocidal properties; and is fabricated using green, scalable chemistries with a process amenable to integration into spiral-wound membrane element.
Novelty: Membrane assembly comprises: a non-metallic, porous substrate; a graphene oxide membrane formed over the non-metallic, porous substrate; and a chemical linker interface (212) covalently binding the graphene oxide membrane to the non-metallic, porous substrate, where the chemical linker interface includes an adhesion promoter for bonding the graphene oxide membrane to the non-metallic, porous substrate and a flux promoter for separating the non-metallic, porous substrate from the graphene oxide membrane in a spaced-apart, overlying relation and the flux promoter includes many silane molecules that bond to the non-metallic, porous substrate on one end and include a hydrophilic region on the opposite end.
