Fragment capture device
DWPI Title: Staggered-bar fragment capture device for use in explosive/munition containment applications, has positioning plate comprising holes for holding array of cylindrical bars in specific position, where bars are arranged in two adjacent rows
Abstract: A fragment capture device for use in explosive containment. The device comprises an assembly of at least two rows of bars positioned to eliminate line-of-sight trajectories between the generation point of fragments and a surrounding containment vessel or asset. The device comprises an array of at least two rows of bars, wherein each row is staggered with respect to the adjacent row, and wherein a lateral dimension of each bar and a relative position of each bar in combination provides blockage of a straight-line passage of a solid fragment through the adjacent rows of bars, wherein a generation point of the solid fragment is located within a cavity at least partially enclosed by the array of bars.
Use: Staggered-bar fragment capture device for use in explosive/munition containment applications.
Advantage: The array of two rows of bars is positioned to eliminate line-of-sight trajectories between the generation point of fragments and a surrounding containment vessel or asset. The capture device allows easy replacement of damaged parts of a containment system without replacing the entire system. The capture device relaxes constraints on a specific explosive charge configuration or design that is contained in the vessel and allows the user to place different types of fragmenting charges inside a system while preventing damage to the containment vessel or to a valuable nearby asset.
Novelty: The device has an array of cylindrical bars (10, 12) that are arranged in two adjacent rows, where each row is approximately concentric with respect to the adjacent row. Each row is staggered with respect to the adjacent row, where lateral dimension and relative position of each bar provides blockage of a straight-line passage for a solid fragment through the two adjacent rows of bars. A generation point of the solid fragment is located within a cavity that is partially enclosed by two adjacent rows of bar. A positioning plate comprises holes that hold the array of bars in a specific position.
