Aqueous Na-ion redox flow battery with ceramic NaSICON membrane

DWPI Title: Redox flow battery used in battery system, comprises anode portion comprising anolyte chamber containing anolyte solution and anode electrode, cathode portion comprising catholyte chamber, and barrier comprising sodium super-ionic conductor
Abstract: A redox flow battery is described herein that has a sodium-super-ionic-conductor NaSICON barrier disposed between an anolyte chamber of the battery and the catholyte chamber of the battery. The NaSICON barrier prevents crossover of solvents or active redox species between the anolyte chamber and the catholyte chamber, while permitting transport of sodium ions between the chambers. In exemplary embodiments, the anolyte chamber includes an anolyte solution that comprises a first active redox species dissolved in a first solvent, while the catholyte chamber includes a catholyte solution that comprises a second active redox species dissolved in a second solvent.
Use: Redox flow battery used in battery system (claimed).
Novelty: A redox flow battery comprises an anode portion (106) comprising an anolyte chamber (110) containing an anolyte solution and an anode electrode, a cathode portion (108) comprising a catholyte chamber (114) containing a catholyte solution and a cathode electrode, and a barrier for separating the anolyte chamber and the catholyte chamber. The anolyte solution comprises active redox species (R1) and a sodium salt (S1). The catholyte solution comprises active redox species (R2) and a sodium salt (S2). The barrier comprises a sodium super-ionic conductor. The responsive to an electrical load (104) is connected to the anode electrode and the cathode electrode, in which the sodium ions migrate from the anolyte solution to the catholyte solution across the sodium super-ionic conductor barrier to balance the flow of electrons from the anode electrode to the cathode electrode.
