Antenna with distributed strip and integrated electronic components

DWPI Title: Antenna for use in wireless communication system, has electrical conductor having width, and electronic components that are mounted on surfaces of dielectric substrate within outer extents of distributed strip configuration
Abstract: An antenna comprises electrical conductors arranged to form a radiating element including a folded line configuration and a distributed strip configuration, where the radiating element can be in proximity to a ground conductor and/or arranged as a dipole. Embodiments of the antenna include conductor patterns formed on a printed wiring board, having a ground plane, spacedly adjacent to and coplanar with the radiating element. An antenna can comprise a distributed strip patterned on a printed wiring board, integrated with electronic components mounted on top of or below the distributed strip, and substantially within the extents of the distributed strip. Mounting of electronic components on top of or below the distributed strip has little effect on the performance of the antenna, and allows for realizing the combination of the antenna and integrated components in a compact form. An embodiment of the invention comprises an antenna including a distributed strip, integrated with a battery mounted on the distributed strip.
Use: Antenna for use in a hand-held, portable or small device, that is affixed to an object such as radio frequency identification (RFID) in a wireless communication system for receiving and/or transmitting radio frequency signals, where the RFID is used in manufacturing, retail, medical care, agriculture, transportation and environmental stewardship applications.
Advantage: The antenna allows the electronic components to be mounted on top or below the distributed strip, thus avoiding reduction in performance of the antenna, and allowing a combination of the antenna and the integrated components to be realized in a compact form.
Novelty: The antenna (100) has an electrical conductor (102) having a width provided on a surface of a dielectric substrate e.g. ceramic, where the electrical conductor is arranged in a folded line configuration (104) e.g. meander line. Another electrical conductor (106) has another width that is greater than the former width. The latter electrical conductor is electrically connected to the former electrical conductor, and electronic components e.g. lithium-ion batteries, are mounted on the surfaces of the dielectric substrate within the outer extents of a distributed strip configuration (108).
